Vaine fakafulutāmakiaʻi/en
Appearance
The smothering vine (unofficial name) is an introduced vine from India of the cucumber family. Its fruits (unripe green or ripe bright red) can be eaten, as can anything else of the plant. It is a very aggressive plant, quickly smothering any other plant it is growing on, covering electricity poles, and so forth.
In Tonga it is usually called a vine, as the plant is too new to have a local name. The English name is Scarlet gourd or Ivy gourd.
It is wildly spreaded now on Tongatapu, but has not yet reached to Vavaʻu. FOKI
